| THE LIPU OASIS OF SANTA LUCE |
| |
 |
The natural park, hidden amongst the
hills and cultivated fields, in the middle of the Tuscany
countryside. It includes the whole area of a small lake which
was constructed by the Solvay Italy during the 1960's as a water
basin, to be used if there was ever a fire at the industrial complex
situated along the coast.
The Oasis of Santa Luce, with more
than 150 censured species, represents an important stopping point
for migrating birds and every season has its own protagonist. During
the Winter the lake fills with multicoloured ducks
of which moriglioni, teals,
royal wild duck etc, while cormorants
give shows standing in pose on the branches of trees with their
wings stretched out drying in the sun.
During the Summer the reeds fill with small birds, hard to see,
just like the nightingale bird, cannaiola
and the cannereccione. While the typical
bottle style nests hang swinging on the tamarisk and the multi-coloured
bee-eater set up on the higher part of the lake. In the morning
it is easy to see the kestrel and the buzzard patrolling the fields,
or the shape of the lake falcon while
it flies over the reeds: instead at night the barn owl and the small
owls, together with other night-time predators
come into action.

But the most exciting season is Spring: the flowering hillsides
give the scenery to the wedding party with their luxurious wedding
dress, becoming the symbol of the oasis. Migrating birds also appear
on the lake and along its banks. Above all the herons
like the nitticora, the gazzetta,
the tarabusino and the red heron.
In an eco-system like that of the lake there is a great richness
of life and biological differences like the elegant dragon fly,
the coloured vannessa 10 and other butterflies and the great night-time
sphinx. Reptiles and amphibians are also in constant presence.
